Suppose for a moment that we found a way to time travel.
I have a theory on how it would work. The mechanics. I would like everyone here to discuss the idea that time and space are relative but not the same.
Most modern ideas about time travel insinuate that to travel back in TIME is to travel back and see different things happen in that SPACE.
To travel back to 1931, you would suddenly be in the midst of World War II.
But I have a theory of time and space being related but not so closely. More like 2 parts to a machine, the physical part (space) and the incorporeal, more theoretical part (time).
The way I see it, to travel back in time does not mean that objects in that space will reverse age or that suddenly things from the past will show up in that space. I feel that time is more of a reference point in the universe that has no affect on what is in that space.
I compare it to a pointer in programming. Doesn't matter where the pointer is, just matters what it's pointing to.

This isn't a question, but a discussion moreso.
I would like people to discuss this theory of (as Canadaguy pointed out) time being intangible.
That time travel is a misconception and really is almost fruitless in the sense that you cannot alter past events and that being in a previous time slot does not change a thing about the physical realm

Very interesting.
I still believe though that you cannot move back in time in the sense that you can travel back to a past event, but rather you would be shifting the infinite time line of the universe, which in essence does nothing but change your current state of time.
Thank you VERY much for that link, I'm very interested in seeing physical experiments in which time has been isolated.
But I truly believe that time cannot be isolated because it is joined to space, so to isolate the time you would need destroy the space, which suddenly makes it completely intangible and non-existent except in theory.

And time travel isn't a fantasy. It's a misconception. You are thinking of time travel in the wrong context. You are thinking it can do things that you can't.
Also, moving forward in time isn't a problem. You aren't really jumping ahead of anyone when you move forward faster in time, you are merely experiencing the time elapsed differently.
Like when you fall asleep and wake up 10 seconds later and it's morning already. You didn't just jump ahead of everyone, you merely experienced it differently than someone that stayed up all night.

Err, I didn't realize my typo with World War II.
I meant 1941 >.<

Many of you people don't understand the concept I have proposed and I truly believe you didn't even read the concept.
Like the very last response I just got, "Time travel is a man made blah blah blah"
That is the MISCONCEPTION I was talking about.
You're thinking of time travel as a means of actually going somewhere or doing something. But what I'm saying is that all it is is a shift in perception. Like moving an infinite line back 2 feet. What does that matter? You didn't go anywhere.
That is the concept.

I actually just saw a lecture by a scientist Ronald Mallett who has a theory on how to travel back in time. His website can be found here:
http://www.physics.uconn.edu/~mallett/main/main.htm
Time and space are very closely linked, and it has been proven that the faster you travel in space, the slower time passes for you. There have been proven experiments as long ago as 1970. Anyways, Mallett's time machine involves relfecting a very exact lazer so that it will bend the space within the confines of the lazer. Then when items are placed in that space they should travel back in time. Check it out, it's quite interesting.

First of all, if you went to 1931, you would be at the early part of the Great Depression with years to go before WWII started.
If a person can travel in time, then time must exist. To travel back in time, the past must exist right now otherwise you can't go there. The same is true of the future. For you to go there, it must exist right now. And, if the future exists, then the events of existence must be pre-ordained.
For instance, if you traveled to the future and saw your grandchildren, then the fact of your parenthood and grand parenthood could not be changed.
I don't know if time and space are inseparably joined or not. However, I don't think traveling in time is possible.
Of course, if you could travel faster than light, you could go very far away from the earth, look back toward it and see the images of what happened long ago. And, since time slows down the faster you go, when you returned to earth, it would be many many years indeed in the future of the planet, but just a little into your future.
Could be wrong. Been wrong before.

There is no such thing as time travel. Time is a man made concept to coordinate activities.
We get older because our cells take longer to replace with each passing day. We determine our days and nights by the movement of the earth around the sun. This is travel but not time travel. In other words, reversing the movement of the earth around the sun will not let one travel backwards in time. They say that we age slower as we approach light speed. The truth is, you will die at that speed.
Forget about a journey through time. Focus on a journey through life.

Um yeah ... 1931 wasn't World War II, I don't think you're ready for time travel yet.
If time travel is possible, then all we have to wait around for the people from the future to get here, then ask them how.

Yes; as time is not a dimension, only an intangible tool to measure the relations between energy(matter) and dimension.

Actually, time travel is simply a fantacy, particularly with the Hollywood people. In reality, even when this is possible, it is not you who is able to travel through time, it shall be time that runs through in front of you, as though in a screen. When this becomes ppossible, you will further hvae to struggle with the space problem, how to place space in this time run? Utill you are able to give specific space programme, your time will not be able to present anything in your screen. interesting thoughts, but how this can be, not predictable.
