Jesus...I have had three kids and always had several cats. Never had a problem.
Just normal cleaning is all that is necessary.

I've never heard about the cat hair thing - on the contrary, as another answerer said, children who grow up with pets are less prone to allergies and astma.

Unless you have a child with allergies, the only thing I would watch out for regarding cats and babies is that the cat doesn't accidentally lie on the baby (you can get special nets to cover the pram etc.) - and later, that the toddler isn't too rough with the cat.

- and then there is toxoplamosis to watch out for if you are pregnant and have cats that go outside. The risk here can be minimized by just taking a few simple precautions, so all in all cats and babies should get along fine.

Cats like to lay near some babies because they're warm and they smell of spit up milk. Unfortunately the baby can't push a cat away that's too heavy and is laying across it or too near the baby's mouth. Keep the cat out of the crib.

Cats stay away from older babies because those clutch and pull, and no cat likes fur pulled out.

Just keep the cat out of the baby's room when the baby is sleeping, and monitor how the cat reacts to the new baby. You'll be able to tell if the cat is curious, wants nothing to do with the loud new stranger, or falls somewhere in between.

A lot of families have dogs and cats around newborns. You just need to know your animals to make sure everyone (even the animals) are safe.

Never heard of that. The only people that may have a hard time with cats is if they have allergies or asthma. In fact, I've always heard babies that are in houses with cats and/or dogs are less prone to allergies. I think it's something to do with them becoming accustomed/immune to the allergens. I wouldn't worry though.

actually the opposite is true. Kids exposed to more "allergens" in their growing up environment tend not to develop things like asthema and allergies. It somehow works to train a childs immune system to tolerate dust and dander and all sorts of other things.
