Jealousy is not necessarily a sin. Covetousness is. One may be rightly jealous for what is rightly his, but one would be wrong to covet what is not his.
In fact, jealousy may be godly...
(2 Corinthians 11:2) For I am jealous over you with a godly jealousy, for I personally promised you in marriage to one husband that I might present you as a chaste virgin to the Christ.
(Exodus 34:14) Jehovah, whose name is Jealous, he is a jealous God
(1 Kings 19:10) [Elijah] said: “I have been absolutely jealous for Jehovah the God of armies; for the sons of Israel have left your covenant
(Zechariah 1:14-15) Jehovah of armies has said: “I have been jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with great jealousy. 15 With great indignation I am feeling indignant against the nations
(Romans 11:13-14) I glorify my ministry [to non-Hebrews], if I may by any means incite those who are my own [Hebrew] flesh to jealousy and save some from among them
But covetousness is always wrong...
(Mark 7:20-23) That which issues forth out of a man is what defiles a man; for from inside, out of the heart of men, injurious reasonings issue forth: ...adulteries, covetings, acts of wickedness, deceit, loose conduct, an envious eye, blasphemy, haughtiness, unreasonableness. All these wicked things issue forth from within and defile a man.
(Luke 12:15) guard against every sort of covetousness
(Romans 1:28-29) God gave them up to a disapproved mental state, to do the things not fitting, filled as they were with all unrighteousness, wickedness, covetousness, badness, being full of envy
(Romans 13:9) You must not covet

You miss the point. Jehovah is the Lord God, the Creator God, he is the only God. So when people worship their trees rocks, temples, sex what ever they are giving worship to the creation not the creator. If you provided for your family in every-way, food, shelter, love, health care, everything, but they did not even acknowledge you, but instead gave their thanks and love to a rock, in place of your, how would you feel about that?

He is jealous of anything that takes HIS place in your life.
Its called being protective. Especially of those who are HIS. The bible says "we have been bought with a price" and we no longer belong to ourselves.
He has a RIGHT , by virtue of being our CREATOR, and also by virtue of having PAID with His own blood to redeem us BACK from the power and penalty of sin, to watch over that which legally is HIS.

He is only jealous in the sense of people worshiping false gods and not giving the deserved glory to him and to him alone. Jesus often prayed to God, whom he called Father, and he also taught others to do so. (Matthew 6:9-11; Luke 11:1, 2)
In prayer with his apostles—only hours before his death—Jesus petitioned: “Father, the hour has come; glorify your son, that your son may glorify you. This means everlasting life, their taking in knowledge of you, the only true God, and of the one whom you sent forth, Jesus Christ.”—John 17:1, 3.

Sin is the breaking of the law.
1 John 3:4
Everyone who commits sin also breaks the law; sin is the breaking of law. (HCSB)
Being jealous is not a sin unless you covet. In the case of our creator it means he is angry and does not approve of his people worshipping false gods.

Yes and No, as for Jealousy being bad. In this context it is simply saying he demands sole worship, none of this worshiping him AND others. He expects us to serve him.
I often think of it like a Wife, she has EVERY right to insist her man ONLY be married to her.

jealousy indicates insecurity. strange that an all powerful super being would be insecure. no?
PS. folks claiming that the Bible god's jealousy is somehow different from human jealousy apparently fail to take into account their god's reaction to his jealousy. he wraths and kills ... just like a jealous human.

God phrases the truth in terms we can easily understand. We, as earthly humans, cannot possibly grasp the entire celestial wisdom of God until we are united with Him again in Heaven.
It is just important to remember not to evaluate God with human standards and boundaries.

You can't apply human concepts to God.
Our concept of what jelousy is nothing like what God's is.
