Which is more powerful, a .50 BMG or a .585 Nyati?
Well here are the specs for the .50 BMG round: A .50 BMG round can produce between 10,000 and 13,000 foot pounds of energy or more, depending on its powder and bullet type, as well as the rifle it was fired from. Velocity: 2,618 fps.
The Nyati: 750 gr Solid 10,130 foot pounds of energy. Velocity: 2,466 fps.
Looks like the .50 BMG still has more power although the Nyati throws a wider slug.
Best.

.585 Nytati is a special purpose sporting rifle cartridge.
It is designed to disable every living game animal on the planet at close (50-75m) range.
It excels in this role! Albeit at great expense to the shoulder and wallet of the hunter.
The .50BMG round is not suited to hunting, it is an exemplary long range target round, and is a fine choice for Military weapons.
The .50BMG is designed to destroy light armored vehicles and aircraft at long ranges, it is effective to 2000-2500m.
The .585 Nyati is designed to kill large game at short to medium ranges (50-75 yds)
The .50BMG is quite capable of taking the same game,
the .585 Nyati could likely disable any light personal armor.
But the purpose of the round is not to be lost in it's capability,
One is a dedicated and expensive medium range dangerous game cartridge(.585 Nyati)
The other is a dedicated and expensive long range target or military intervention cartridge(.50bmg)
Gross power is similar but the shape and speed of the projectile determine the effectiveness of the round.
The .50 BMG will generally penetrate more "cars and walls"
than a .585 Nyati.
But if that is your intention the Police will penetrate alot more of your skull with their pistols and AR-15's than your $8000.00 "super-rifle" will disable the American infra-structure.
Both cartrigdes have their place, but comaring the two is simply irresponsible and a case of apples and oranges.
the .50Bmg will cost you $2-$25 a round and $2000-$10,000 for the rifle.
The .575 Nyati, $10-$40 a round and $8,000-$100,000 for the rifle(assuming an african quaility double, or bolt gun)

.50 BMG
The .585 was developed by Ross Seyfried and is touted to be the most powerful of the shoulder fired weapons and it probably is. Here is the only loading listed:
.585 Nyati 750 gr Solid 2466 ft/s 10130 ft·lbs
The .50 BMG is not a shoulder fired weapon as nobody I know could hold one up long enough to aim it. Here are the .50 BMG loads:
.50 BMG
647 gr Speer 3044 ft/s 13144 ft·lbf
655 gr ADI 3029 ft/s 13350 ft·lbf
700 gr Barnes 2978 ft/s 13971 ft·lbf
750 gr Lapua 2618 ft/s 11419 ft·lbf
800 gr Barnes 2895 ft/s 14895 ft·lbf

The 585 Nyati, powerful as it is, is no match for the 50BMG.
Maximum ME from the 585 is 10,620 ft/lbs is with a 750g bullet at 2525 FPS.
Maximum ME from the 50 BMG is 13,910 ft/lbs with a 660g bullet at 3080 FPS. (PMC factory load).
Recoil from the Nyati with the above load in a 10lb rifle,is 151 ft/lbs, what fun!
