She eats three meals that are highly nutritious in all other respects, but I worry that her fat intake is inadequate.

She has always been slim, but not anorexically boney or unhealthy-looking. She says that she has a medical condition that makes her body 'hold' fat easily. She does not look ill and she is not weak or tired because of it. Unless she is lying about the diet, I can't understand how she isn't weak or ill.

What could happen to her if she doesn't change her diet? Degenerative conditions - scary. Maybe I can scare some common sense into her. :(

the fat intake should not be below 20% of the total calories. when the fat intake drops well below this level it will cause a drastic decrease in test production in women as much as 30-40%. this will obvisouly have a very negative effect on the metabolic rate and over time a loss of muscle mass will occur causing the metabolism to slow even further.

with such a low fat intake it would also be near impossible to maintain a healthy HDL:LDL ratio.

* unfortunately far too many people are under the illusion that consuming fat in the diet makes you fat. just about every degenerative disease has been traced back to either a lack of certain fatty acids in the diet or the inability for the body to metabolize certain fatty acids. dietary fats are essential for proper health.

That's way too low for fat intake. And it also indicates (unless she is on a low calorie diet, too, which is even worse) she probably is getting too much of the other nutrients (protein and carbs).

Being fit isn't about having a low fat diet. It is about keeping fat intake under control and making sure your choices are good.

There are fat soluble vitamins - eg A, D, K, which are found in dietary fat. She may well be missing these.
