Naval Medical Center Okinawa, Japan. I was part of the commissioning crew when we took over the old Army hospital and turned it into a Navy facility. I had quarters for my family and myself about one block from the office. It was my third tour in Okinawa and my fourth tour in Japan, so I knew the language and the culture. My children attended a Catholic Mission school instead of the Defense Department schools. As a result of going to school with mostly third-country nationals they were exposed to and became comfortable with different people from different lands.
When my time came to leave my staff presented me with the traditional cake at a little gathering in my department. The six Japanese members of the staff insisted that the writing on the cake not be the traditional "Sayonara" (Goodbye). Instead it read "Mata Aimasho" (See you again soon).

I've liked all the places that we (my Marine husband and I) have been stationed at. First was Camp Lejeune, NC....I liked being less than 15 mins form the ocean there. Then we got to go back to our home state and city of kansas city, mo....had family close by then. And we are now in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.....it's right by Lake Michigan.....but the best part about all of the places is being with my husband.

I really enjoyed northern Japan. My stateside base was very well located, and I had orders to go back to Tokyo. That did it, I was out. I had no desire to go back, once was enough and I couldn't break theater.
