Use the brush! It will help to keep the areas of deep pockets clean and help to get your gum tissue to a healthy, maintainable level. The gum tissue and bone will not ever grow back but if you don't keep your gums healthy from now on you will lose more bone and eventually you teeth. Your dentist was not giving you bad advise but if you don't trust him then you should find someone you do trust.

Depending on the severity of your gum problems, most of the time gum disease are irreversible. Gingivitis is the only stage of gum disease that is reversible. Perio disease can be stabilize by nonsurgical procedure such as deep cleaning. Deep cleaning will help prevent further bone loss and gum tissue/recession.
If a dentist or hygienist suggest for you to use this brush you should. I would recc that you use it with ease. Do not force the brush into the gums and make sure you toss or change the tip when you notice the wire bending. Make sure you continue to floss and brush throughly.

You need to trust your dentist or change to someone you do trust. Ask him about your gums.
