All - he asked for the best firearm for personal protection in the city.... he didn't ask for your political leanings.

If you're talking about within your home, a shotgun is good (870 pump-action is a good simple one). Birdshot is good, as through-wall penetration is minimized.

If you need a handgun, stick with a revolver (.357), as it can also use a .38 spl round for reduced recoil. Use frangible ammunition to avoid overpenetration through walls - something like the Glaser safety slugs.... A pistol is fine - probably 9 mm, as the ammo is inexpensive and there is a wide variety of ammo and pistols available. Same comment on ammunition. If you're carrying it (legally) in public, you'll probably want Federal Hydra-Shok (sp?) ammunition or something similar.

As far as manufacturers - stay with the quality ones.... Ruger, GLock, SIG-Sauer, Smith & Wesson, Kimber, Para-Ordnance.

Handgun ammo - stay away from military ball ammo, except for practice... The reason is that you're shooting to stop the threat, not just wound the attacker. The military has a different take on engaging the bad guy than the police (or you in protecting yourself). Note I didn't say "shooting to kill;" I said "shooting to stop the threat." Big difference!

Don't depend on 911 to save your butt. Depending on where you are and what other details are active, you may not get a response for up to 10 minutes.

Lastly - since you sound relatively new to firearms, your best bet is to get some training and trying out different firearms before settling on someone else's opinion. You need to be comfortable with whatever you're shooting - because you need to practice - A LOT!!!!!! Plan on practicing weekly - no less often than monthly, and plan on spending $50 to $100/month on ammo for practicing. Depending on your state/city, you might want to look into a CCW - check out www.packing.org.

To the naysayers out there - the police are not always available to save your sorry butt. By case law, they are NOT responsible for your protection - and therefore, not liable if they don't show up in time, etc, etc... You are responsible to yourself and loved ones.

As Benjamin Franklin said, "...Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety..."

Given that - realize there is a lot of responsibility associated with carrying a firearm. Be aware.... But then, I'd rather be judged by 12 than buried by 6.....

Be safe - and give it a LOT of thought. To those who want to depend on others to protect you...... you have that right of choice. But don't whine when things don't go your way. YOU made your choice - both in how you decided to protect yourself/family, as well as electing those who strip away your rights.

Good luck - I'd rather have a completely/legally armed society than an unarmed society where only the bad guys have guns.

Something concealable (but legal) that you can afford to practice with a great deal. Nobody should see it until and unless your life is in immediate danger.

For most folks, I'd recommend a revolver chambered for 357 Magnum.

1) You can practice el cheapo with 38 Special rounds.
2) Revolvers have less bells and whistles than a semiauto. Revolvers are the Polaroid camera of guns...aim and shoot.
3) They're LIGHTER (carrying a slab of metal around everywhere can be trying after awhile).
4) If you can't end a personal defense situation with the six rounds in your revolver...you're done anyway.

Remember to have a post-shooting plan, to include:

1) Holster your weapon (for safety reasons). You do NOT want it in your hands when police arrive on scene, as they will draw down on you. Realize that it'll be taken from you when they arrive, however.
2) Call 911, state "there has been a shooting," and request police and ambulance response.
3) Obey police instructions without debate, so you don't end up getting capped when they show up. All a cop knows is that you're an armed person not on his side. Respect that and realize you will probably get cuffed for a bit.
4) Respectfully decline to make any statement until you've spoken with an attorney. For extra credit, have an attorney in mind before you need one and have his card in your wallet.

specific. think of roughly it a minute... criminals have not have been given any appreciate for the regulation. they'll continually carry weapons, in spite of the fact that in the event that they're banned, via fact they do no longer provide a ****. Gun administration regulations provide criminals a great benefit via fact electorate are no longer able to guard themselves and the police never get there in time to end against the regulation. Then, too, what if the government turns violent? What if the police replace into corrupt and abusive? it fairly is already happening as all of us understand! If all and sundry (no felons) owned a gun, crime wold drop dramatically. might you rob a house in case you knew all and sundry became armed? might you carjack somebody? might you rape somebody understanding they have a gun and could shoot you? i do no longer think of so! The criminals shot deserve dying besides! the awesome to undergo palms is the only component protecting our government in verify... and that's dropping result as regulations get stricter. the government could desire to rule in straightforward terms with permission of the human beings! For the government to have each and all the weapons destroys this gentle potential stability. As for the ignorant remark with regards to the united kingdom.... they have not have been given any actual freedom or privateness. There are 4.3 MILLION surveillance cameras. The British are nicely on their thank you to becoming to be an Orwellian society. the place do you draw the line? in addition they have AUDIO surveillance in the streets. maximum of those are suitable to a important police administration! Your conversations and strikes are monitored 24/7! specific, it fairly is this undesirable and getting worse! Florida is already deploying militia SURVEILLANCE DRONES to secret agent on their electorate! they're airborne awesome now!

911. The police should carry weapons, not you. Chances are you'll harm yourself or someone will take the weapon from you and kill you. It looks easy in the movies, but in real life most people can't fire a weapon properly.
Use your common sense. Lock your doors. Don't venture out alone late at night. If you should shoot someone the police will likely charge you and you'll need a lawyer to defend your "right to defend yourself." You might get fined or imprisioned for firing the weapon and/or sued by the perpetrator for using excessive force. Happens all the time.
