You did not state which engine But any knocking noise is liable to be expensive to repair. Nissan Does not use ANY Mitsubushi parts. The Nissan VG-30e motor has painted steel valve covers and MY Carpathic Mind Reading says this Maxima is a SE with the 24 valve VG-30DE motor with silver aluminum valve covers. With lots of miles the valve timing sprockets are rattling at idle. Those sprockets are replaceable at almost $1,000 each the engine has two. Most the time only one sprocket has failed the one that is in back and hard to get to.

First off, the VG30 in that Maxima is a Nissan engine- not the crappy Mazda engine. It's the same engine used in the 300ZX and Nissan V6 trucks. My father had a Maxima with that engine with over 300K trouble-free miles on it. The Mitsubishi one wouldn't make it 50k miles before it started burning oil.
Anyway, this sound like an expensive fix. Then again, it might not be. I would take it to a mechanic before I bought it and get a diagnostic done. It could be serious or it could be something as minor as bad gas. Get it checked out and go from there.
If it turns out to be the valves, I wouldn't pay over $700 for it. Then I'd just go buy a used JDM engine from Japan. They have around 40,000 miles on them and you get a warranty on it as well. The engine shouldn't cost you more than $1200 including installation. If the rest of the car is in excellent condition, go that route. If not, don't bother with it.

This car will be nothing but trouble for you. The 3.0 Mitsubishi engine in that car was nothing but trouble for Nissan and Dodge from 1988 to 1995. If this engine is knocking, run. Like the other guy said. These engines are trouble.

It could be a few different things: 1. it could just be low on oil, or 2. it could be lose valves which shouldn't be a hard thing to do. Take to a mechanic and let him listen to it, he needs take the valve cover off. The valves may need to be replace which might cost quiet abit. Just check around.
