uhm, i think money is easier cause he can actually chose what he wants to do with it,
besides its tonight, i dont have time!

"Congratulations on your bar mitzvah!" is enough. You can find bar mitsvah cards at larger city stationary stores and Factory Card Outlet stores.
$40 is a generous gift. You don't have to give him money. What about a gift card to a favorite store/restaurant?

You can buy bar mitzvah cards where you can just sign your name. It's boring to give money. If you are good friends, you know what he likes so make the gift a little more personal or even a gift card for itunes.
