If you are looking for a specific breed contact that national breed club. (you can locate them by searching on google) and asking for a listing of member breeders in your region. You can also contact your local kennel club as as for there members who work with the breed you are interested in.

As for picking out a breeder first of all research your breed and see all the testing that should be done by a responsible breeder before they breed and make sure the breeder you go to does the testing.

I would also recommend signing up for at least one of the Yahoo Groups for the breed you are looking at. Especially if you are a first time buyer of purebreed dogs some of the breeders can come acoss looking good at face value but are really puppy mills. Many times the breed "old timers" will be familar with them and can help steer you away. It will also give you the opportunity to run the breeder you are looking at by a good sized group of people and see if any of them have experiance with them.

When we movee to another state, it happened that my breeder lived next door. She's been in the dog show for over 30+ years. Before I got my first dog in my life time, I played with her dogs and I did like the breed (shelties). Now, all my three girls are born next door.

I have gone to several different breeders over the years, in the USA and Canada, or bred the dog myself.

One of ours was from a pound, the other was through a rescue (but was not currently IN the rescue).. and the other one.. was a breeder, but I can't think of her name.. grr. She was out of Grand Rapids Michigan..(she breeds Miniature Schnauzers .. and any that don't sell she keeps in the home as a family pet) I seem to recall the sire's name was Black Jack something.. Without going through and finding his papers I can't be more specific..

well, for starters , I don't know about breeders or such , but I started looking in the newspaper for a dog and wala I got one she was a cocker spaniel and registered too ta boot . It cost us $100.00 for her and she got bred and had 7 wonderful and beautiful PUPPIES AND THEN I COULDN'T SELL ANY OF THEM , cause i couldn't afford the ad in the paper to run for a week or more so I lost money and alot of other animals I have gotten over the years I just got for free except for the one i have now which i paid $50.00 for and he is registered but all the others as i said before i got FOR FREE , SO JUST CHECK YOUR LOCAL NEWSPAPERS FOR PETS AND then of course call them and they will tell about the pet if it's registered or not and how much they are , make sure to ask lots and lots of questions , never be afraid to ask those questions ok. Hope this helps .

I dont know his name now but he sold us a supposed to be pure breed minature dachshund who kind of looks like he has got chiuahua in him an is very small. But he gave us papers. We got him dna tested for free so were gonna find out if he is a full dachshund or not. It doesnt really matter because he is a good dog but we payed to much for a mixed breed.

Do you want one to hunt over?? What do you plan to hunt??
Do you want a herding dog?? What do you plan to herd??

There are different breeders in different areas. I would go to petfinder.com, or an animal shelter.
