I guess the biggest irony is that being religious is not the same as being connected spiritually. You can be really heavy into religion and not have any idea how your life effects those around you. Many people that are very religious, professing a strong faith commit some of the most horrible hate crimes imaginable and then everyone is shocked by their actions. Others who don't belong to any mainline religion, yet follow a spiritual path of connectedness to the divine can act in a way that if they were in those religions would mark them as very pious, because they are so spiritually aware. However they are still branded by the mainline religious as the enemy, lost in sin and devil worshipers. Now there are those in mainline religions who honestly live up to the best ideals of what it is to be divinely connected as well so they are less religious than spiritually aware. This is why the term religious has given so many people a bad taste in their mouth, especially if we are talking about Christians or Moslems who at least in the news media have been the biggest offenders. Now there are plenty of good people following those religions and so we must remember that often the ones who give us a bad taste in our mouth are exceptions to the general rule. It would help if religions didn't have convert or kill policies or go on holy wars like the Crusades and the Jihad. Spiritual people don't play that game. they recognise that there are more similarities than differences and decide to get along with each other. Persecution of non Christians is still alive and well in the world today, just as well as the attempts by certain Islamic groups to convert the world to Islam or commit as much mayhem and destruction as possible. Please try to remember these people are the exceptions. The religions themselves as found in their sacred writings are still basically very good paths of spiritual awakening.

When did "Religion" become a bad word?
I'm baffled at how the word "religion" is almost always used in a derogatory way lately. When did that happen? It reminds me of how, a long time ago, the word "gay" used to mean "happy". (It still does in a dictionary.) But now if you tell someone, "gee, you sure are gay today", they might think you're calling them a homosexual.
Words have been getting twisted up a lot in modern culture. No wonder people don't communicate very well.
The Merriam-Webster defines "religion" as:
- : the service and worship of God or the supernatural: commitment or devotion to religious faith or observance
- : a personal set or institutionalized system of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices
Sounds okay to me. Any worshippers of ANY religion have a problem with that definition? I believe that people who say "religion" in a negative way are the "do-your-own-thing" type of people. They "personalize" God, and forget that we are a human family, and like all families, we have our traditions: They forget that families have special days, special little things they do AS a family, and so does the family of God.
I love my Catholic faith, I love my Catholic religion, and I love my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Anyone can twist the word up all they want: The only loser in that situation is them.

It depends only on the person, some are selective to the commandments of their religion. If they find some rules and guidance against to their personal liking or ways, irony comes in.

The irony of religion is that religion is a human construct; human paradigm and God is infinite.
It seems to me like trying to stuff all the air in the world into a shoe box. But even THAT analogy is too limited in its scope. Indeed, the "scope" is off the graph because the scope encompasses the infinite.
edit: the OTHER irony is that religion and faith can be world apart.

The religions inflicting those divisions all have one ingredient in undemanding.... intolerance. not in elementary terms do all of them say that they have got the final actuality, yet they say that all of us else has not something yet lies. and that they flow extra advantageous to assert that those "lies" and opposing ideals can't be tolerated. because of the fact of this those Abrahamic cults reason wars. And it is likewise why they are the dominant religions on earth. they have killed off their opposition for hundreds of years. however the answer is already right here. the answer is coaching. coaching destroys faith, and creates atheists. And as quickly as faith is long gone, (i'm guessing in 3 to 4 generations), human beings would be compelled to be trouble-free with one yet another, and in the event that they nevertheless % to conflict with one yet another, they gained't have the luxurious of asserting a "god" instructed them to do it.

The irony is that God gives everyone this free gift of eternal life with Him if we only believe Jesus is His Son, and yet not everyone accepts it.
