I am wondering about a regular character such as a ross or rachel appearing as a regular character on another network. I think this happens for soap stars on one network that appear on primetime shows on another network.

Summer Glau...who plays a classmate of John Connor in the upcoming series... "Terminator..... The Sarah Connor Chronicles"...which debuts in January of 2008...also is on the cast of The 4400...as Tess Doerner...one of the abductees returned to earth.
So starting next year...she will be in two separate series airing in the same year. For those of you like me that have already seen the pilot of the Terminator TV pilot...pleaser...no spoilers. You knjow why. Let others enjoy for themselves.

There was Heather Locklear who divided her time between a main character on both "TJ Hooker" and "Dynasty". She was shuttled between the sets by limo. I think both shows were owned by Spelling. Afterwards he used her as designated savior for his shows needing a ratings bump. As in "Melrose Place".
