You can use Windows own file checker . . . from a command prompt type SFC to launch the System File Checker

If it replaces file, you may need to reapply some updates.

Also simply use the "check for updates" option in media player to get latest version of it.

You didn't mention if you have the latest version of Windows Media Player or not (which is version 11). If you are using a lower version number on WinXP or Vista, I would suggest you uninstall the version on your computer, reboot the computer and then download the latest version. This will usually clear up issues with the program.

You may also want to ensure you have the latest security fixes for your Windows programs.

You can check this for free at:
http://secunia.com/software_inspector/
After you run this FREE program, you will receive an on-screen report with software on your computer which will need to be updated to fully protect you from known security threats. What I especially like about this site is that they provide links directly to the proper version of the software you have installed.

HTH!

Why not just download WMP 11. If you already have this one, downloading again won`t lose any music etc as the music etc is on your HD.
If you have a dodgy WMP 11, downloading again will replace anything lost.
