Well... he's omniscient, remember? He did it so that in the future, atheists would get to say...

Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish zombie, who is his own father, can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him that you accept him as your master so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced, by a talking snake with legs, to eat a piece of fruit from a magical tree... (etc.)... and that there is something horribly wrong with people who ARE NOT so gullible and droolingly stupid as to believe such outrageously ridiculous codswallop.

See?... he had (has?) a sense of humor. And he wanted us to have a way to easily sort out the insane people... although I wonder if he know that would amount to 85% of the population? Sure... he must have... he's omniscient... having only 15% of the people being sane must be part of his plan.

Hey... what do you think? Does he REALLY want to burn the SANE people in hell for all eternity, and allow the INSANE ones to live forever? Somehow, that just doesn't seem right to me. I think that there must be some kind of trick involved here...

Same reason a hunter lays bait in the trap?
I am in no way saying that the bible story EVER happened but you question is why and I think that even the bible authors understood the nature of religion and so the created a god who outwitted his creations. Well I have one thing to say to this god fella - it's not big and it's not clever!
I could lay some treats out a Halloween and then accuse the first dressed up kid of stealing from my bowl of life - as punishment they will have to do chores Mr. Miyagi style - wax on wax off, wax on wax off.....

Even if to some it seems like a crock!
I have learned in school about religion, I am not an expert but this is the way that the Bible is presented to us ,in metaphors!

The tree was a test ,you are right ! but from that we have learned that temptation and wants do exist and everyone of us is exposed to it in our daily life .

So if this was a trap we sure fell for it! we have proven not only to God but to rest of humanity that we are sinners and that we are not perfect! So now God know that his creations all have a flaw of some kind.

OBEDIENCE OF CREATED TO CREATOR

When the electric heater is plugged in to the right source, heat is expected.

When the freezer is plugged in to the right source, it is expected to free.

To be plugged into the right source for life, [ the life of the soul is the spirit of God, it belongs to God Isa.42:5 ]; the created must stay in contact with and connected to the creator, if he is told how to do so and does not obey and becomes disconnected Gen.6:3; from his life source and is own his own, how long can he last? Psm.90:10; where is his life source going to come from Eccl.3:19-21; 12:7;
HOW CAN ADAM'S OFFSPRINGS HAVE LIFE ETERNAL?
1Cor.15:22-28;
As in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
HOW ARE THEY MADE ALIVE? Psm.104:29,30; Eze.37:12-14; By Spirit of God?
When they are all on the face of the earth, they are given the same chance as Adam had as he caused all to be LOST and Christ Jesus gives all a chance to be SAVED and be in perfect contact and connection with the creator Rev.21:1-5; All is made as new and perfect as before Eden.

Gen 2:8 Now the LORD God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. 9 And the LORD God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
Gen 2:15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die."
Gen 3:1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?"
2 The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.' "

4 "You will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman. 5 "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."

Gen 3:6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

God probably put the tree there to see it they would obey his command not to eat of it....they had all the other trees to eat from but the serpent (Devil) beguiled them and lied to them saying they would not surely die. It sounds like they were doing fine until the Devil came along.
You can question why God would put temptation there in the first place but God wants people to obey him out of their own free will which is a sign of love and obedience, not because they have no other choice. How else would God have truly known if they were faithful to Him and followed His commandments? I'm sure if there was no tree of knowledge, the devil would have tempted them some other way...it's just how the story goes.

If I let my dog in my house and told him he could sit anywhere but not on the couch, why do you think I would do that? Obviously so he doesn't get it dirty or tear it up as many dogs would do. But do you think that the dog knows why I would tell him to stay off the couch? No but I do. In the same way God has many reasons for may things far beyond the understandings of men. That doesn't mean that there is no reason we can understand, but if not the important thing is that God has a reason and he can be trusted.

Well, God needed to put his porn collection SOMEWHERE. Don't you watch Family Guy, silly? ; )

Anyway, I believe the christians say that it was supposed to be some sort of test against Adam and Ste- I mean... Eve (Heheh), to see if they would obey him no matter what. The test got kind of botched, however, considering the snake dude kind of lied to Eve about the whole thing. Honestly, its not her fault. She hasn't been introduced to the concept of LYING, has she? I thought both Adam and Eve were supposed to be the only two beings not born knowing the concept of sin... Hmm????

Either that, or there could be deeper meaning to it... Something like this?

"The more you know, the more likely you're going to hell?"

They do call it the 'Tree of Knowledge', and Adam and Eve were supposedly dumb as retarded rocks, who took everything for granted, and didn't know the concept of reasoning. In a way, I guess you could say God created Adam and Eve simply because he was bored and wanted new playthings. Dolls with no minds of their own... Taking everything for granted... why does that sound familiar?

The more we learn = the more we sin??????

There were 2 trees there was the tree of life too and the tree of good and evil which is also known as knowledge. See God was making everything in 2s Eve just happened to pick the fruit of knowledge instead of life or was the serpent leading her to the tree of knowledge? I guess my theory is that you have a stove in your house and hopefully you use it but you would not allow your children to use it until they were taught how to properly to use it so there is my theory it was put there for God 's use and we would have found out why later but instead we found out it burns.

Ah! the fallacies of religion. Here is some advice good question but you should have also asked; if god is an all-knowing god then he would have already know the outcome even before creating adam and eve.
