My uncles 70th birthday party is today and as a gift I would like to give him a nice bottle of Brandy or Cognac. As I know nothing about liquor, can someone tell me what would be a nice gift?

A decent brandy or cognac can be had for somewhere between $50 - $200. Anything less than that tends to be coarse and unless your uncle is a connosieur, over that range may not be fully appreciated. Your best bet is to go to a local liquor mart and see what they have on display and what matches your wallet.
I can tell you though that Camus, Courvoisier and Delamain VSOP's are pretty decent and run about $60. If you were to give me a gift, I would love the Spanish brandy "Duque D'Alba" also about $60, a hidden gem.

Napoleon Brandy or Louis Louis XIII Cognac and of course there are some fine Champagne Cognac as well. Accompany that with a fine cigar and brother you have one special gift. But to be perfectly honest any gift is a good gift.

Grand Marnier is an excellent orange-flavored Cognac. They make some gift sets that come with a nice bottle and a pair of snifters in a pretty box. I'd recommend you look at these.
