I do have Indian female co-workers although most of my co-workers wives stay at home. Does custom dictate for an Indian woman to stay at home?

Well what you ask if in regards to the cultural make up of a complete race and nation. Im pakistani but the culture is similar. The culture is stronger in these indian-subcontinental regions and thus the days of the past were where the men went to farm whilst the women made the home. These so-called jobs were due to mixed views of the way life was due to work, honour, society etc.

Remember im referring to culture here and not religion as the job of the female differs immensely in this part. Now why indian women or rather your co-workers wives stay at home can be both personal to them or mainly due to their normal desire to become great parents or perhaps keep up with tradition (another name for culture).

So yes in reality custom usually does dictate that which is culture however most of the immigrants to the UK from india tend to be those from poorer backgrounds looking for better money and life, whereas alot f educated indians are generally found in USA. Since this is the case the immigrants to any nation and for your question its indians to the UK bring over their customs and beliefs that keep them safe and ofcos its what theyre accustomed to and what is right for them as it should be. However whilst they live with these views and ways the indians in actual india are the ones that change and they have become more out-going to more western in their views and behavious. India afterall is becoming the richest nation on earth and you dont do that by keeping all the women at home lol

The same is mainly true of pakistani and of any other immigrant. Look at the cultural difference of eastern europeans. Obviously the further away the immigrant has travelled from the greater the differences shall be, as the indian's saw by the occupation of the so called friendly british of their time. Im lucky cos i was born in britain so dont have to stay at home at all lol

Hope that helps x

ps: if it was about religion well in islam i know women dont have to work at all and I mean even in the home, and yet they are still to be paid for being a wife by the hubby so that she has cash to spend and she can spend this money on absolutely anything she wants and it doesnt have to be on the hubby or the home at all...cos the bills and everything is the mans job to take care of. Unfortunately though many muslims tend not to follow this rule and women tend not to demand it x

I am Pakistani probably an even more conservative version of Indian women, in our culture being a home make and a house wife is the most important job. A lot of women do work but just as many women quit their jobs and become an extremely dedicated wife.

I have lots and lots of women clients and officemates (in our offices around Asia, and around the world) who are Indians.

For this reason, I can not imagine that it is a custom for Indian women to stay home. The solid facts just crush this myth.

Dear Battgirl,

As per your question, most Indian women not allowed to work or job. Because most of the families they avoid the family member (womens) to work out side. Also in muslim culture we protect our womens atleast they stay in home.

This is for your information and record.
