This goes back to old west fighting. When someone was irritated enough he draw out a line in the dirt!
What this meant was it was a challenge to the other, it was like saying you either cross this line or drop it and walk away the loser.
It would be something like Clint Eastwood would say like "Go ahead make my day" but they would say "Go ahead cross this line I dare you!!!!"
Another thing that they did was to put a chip on their shoulders, so the guy would put a chip on his shoulder and say "Go ahead knock that chip off my shoulder I dare you!!!!" Chip is a chip of wood not a potato chip! lol

But that is where cross that line came from, and also the expression he has a chip on his shoulder.

Cross that line is still used today in wars, it was used in Desert Fox, remember we sanctioned off an area and said Iraq better not cross the line or we will retaliate harshly?
