What does smoking cigarettes do for people who smoke? I don't get it...I have nothing against smokers (I don't know many of them) I just don't see the appeal. Standing outside in the cold shivering to have a smoke, the cost of cigarettes, not to mention the health risks and the lingering smell, whats the appeal of smoking to you smokers? What does it do for you?

Initially it doesn't do anything - people used to smoke to look cool or fit in with their friends, back when the majority smoked.

But once they get hooked, they do it because they need the nicotine. It calms their nerves. Cigarettes are very addictive, both physically and pshycologically. Supposedly, it is a harder habit break than heroin addiction.

I think that many smokers are nervous, anxious people and they need to smoke in order to feel at ease.

well i am NOT a smoker. Do you know about alcohol? It is bad for your health even the person who drinks knows it but it is addictive alcoholics cannot resist it for they feel like they will die without alcohol. It is same for smokers. I once asked a smoker the same question and he said that at first smoking is horrible but later it tastes sweet.

I am not a smoker myself, my mother used to smoke.

Nicotine, like any other drugs has an effect on the brain, in this case, it has a 'relaxing' effect on the brain, some claim it helps them to relieve the daily life stress, or that it is like a way to escape out from the reality.

Smoking is exactly like drinking. No one enjoys their first drag off a cigarette, and no one likes their first taste of alcohol. If you dive in it's because you want to be cool. That's it. Then you get hooked.

People start smoking to look cool or grown up. Over time, they become addicted. At this point, it goes from trying to look cool in front of your friends to going out in the cold because you "need" a smoke to relieve stress.

Its for the nicotine. Very simillar to the caffene effect. Try going without any coffee or colas for a while. You'll see. :)

Nicotine is felt in the pleasure receptors in the brain.

So, just like prescription anti-depressants, it fools your brain into thinking you feel good.

Once your brain is given the "feel good" sensation, it wants more and more and more.

You need to try it yourself to understand it.

Go ahead and try, and if it is really as bad as you have said, then you will have no problem kicking it.
