"Face" is a concept common to Asian societies, which roughly means 'being shown the proper respect' based on a person's age, position or perceived importance. 'Losing face' is being embarrassed or humiliated in public, 'keeping face' is therefore something like our 'face-saving' where the senior person can walk away from a situation without getting the blame for something dumb that he has done. A junior or underling will usually take the blame.

Its Chinese for shame faced or losing ones integrity. For instance you lose face if you blundered. And keep face if you come up trumps. And allowed to "keep face" is when you've blundered, they decide to give you a Honourable way out. Like resign not in disgrace.

And finally, a "face saver" is a plot to make sure everything ends in a honourable way for all involved.
