Western civilization seems to have peaked about 40 years ago; this American thinks this is not a coincidence.

Social liberalism as an ideal is generally a good thing. But only to an extent.

The way things are here now (in UK) is an example of liberalism gone WAY too far.

I really don't need to list all the problems that the liberal guardian readers have caused this country, I'm sure most readers here can do that themselves. But I will give two simple exmples of areas where liberal ideals have ruined things. The human rights act, and immigration policy. Think about it.

UK: In answer to your first question I'd have to say yes. There will always be the few who mess everything up but in general, freedom (aka social liberalism) should be the accepted in any society.

In answer to your second question again I'd have to say yes! We have free choice and unfortunately, like in the novel 'Lord of the Flies' - some folk can't hack it and run amock - however, I don't think this should mean curtailing the idea of social liberalism - perhaps there's a third way !!!???

Are Australians not allowed an opinion then? Well, I'm putting in my 2c anyway. Yes it is a good thing, because it was long overdue to replace the paternalistic reactionary society, a hangover from the Victorian (as in British, not southern Australian!) era.

Remember the hymn "All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small"? If you sang that at school, did you also sing the verse that went "The rich man in his castle, the poor man at his gate, God made them high or lowly, and ordered their estate"? Good riddance to all that, I say.

I am an american and I say yes! America was founded on and the constitution was written by those of the school of classical liberalism. Social Liberalism (aka modern liberalism) was practiced in America first by FDR while he was in office. Is it good for America? I say so! The rest of the world? Depends!

Think we'll stick this one on the back burner a while, then hit them with a leaflet campaign!
You could try reading the raingaige at the town hall, or try answering why the little brass ring on a Spear and Jackson No. 3 shovel could possibly come loose!
