You do have to be careful about online sites, but just because they charge a fee doesn't mean they're not reputable. I don't know what area you're in, but I highly reccommend backstage.com and actorsaccess.com. Backstage is from what was originally Dramalogue back in the day and became Backstage a few years ago. It's been an industry standard for actors for as long as i can remember and is highly reputable. Actors have gotten legit casting info from them for ages. They do charge a subscription fee and it's not cheap, however you can search online for free first tosee if there's even anything in your area and second if you can see enough info in the free part, you may be able to find the rest on your own but it will take work. Is it worth it, it's up to you to decide that. For theatre it's relatively easy since most theatre do post audition info on their own sites and usually you can see the theatre name in the free info. FOr tv and film not so much and usually those aren't great auditions anyway. You may be better off with ActorsAccess.com which comes from the people at Breakdown Services which is the casting service that every legit agent in Hollywood uses on a daily basis to see what's out there for thier clients. He reason you can sign up and see audition info for free? It has ads laced in with th auditions and of course you will not see everything that legit agents will. It's watered down, but the auditions are legit and some are for bigtime shows. You may luck out if the show is looking for something really unique and you happen to fit the bill (a 5' african american who knows kung fu and plays the drums or asian 16 year old identical twins) When big name shows are looking for something really unique, I have seen them look on AA. It's free to set up an account and it's free to search for auditions. It costs when you want to submit electronically for an audition. If the production wants a hardcopy instead then you don't pay, you send the headshot and resume on your own through the mail. Also, if you subscribe to Showfax (another industry standard service for actors) then you can submit all you want as long as you have that. It's about $68 per year and it's a sides service so when an audition has sides available through Showfax then you can get them via fax or email so you can prepare for the audition without having to drive all over town picking up your script pages.
Make sure you have the work permit covered and you know all the labor law rules.
good luck!

Hate to tell you this, but unless they are already linked to a reputable casting agency or other entity, most of these online "casting sites" are scams. Virtually all of them want you to pay something to register, and you get very little back in return.
Call some local agencies and schools and find out how to get some of the "trades" - these are the magazines and resource books that list agents, managers, casting directors and even breakdowns of what films and commercials are coming up, as well as where they will be shooting.
As for getting him some experience, get him into theater groups and classes YESTERDAY. Check at the universities with film programs about student films where they will need kids his age in different roles. But be sure he's doing classes while you're doing the research. Just throwing him into the first audition cold is NOT a great idea.

If he really wants to act then sign him up for one of the more reputable stage schools i.e. check the accuracy of claims of success.
Generally speaking (caveat : my info relates to music, rather than acting) anybody who charges an advance fee isn't playing on the straight and narrow - an agent gets commission from monies earnt.
When he's finished his GCSE's there are a number of colleges which teach A level acting and associated studies.
Hope that helps.

Try the webpage for Variety (the entertainment trade newspaper). They have all of the most up to date news and reliable contacts. They may also have some agents/agencies that you could contact.

If he really wants to learn for free, get him into amateur dramatics. There are groups in most towns.
