its not a matter or percentage.
its a matter of service.
would you even leave a $2 tip if the service was bad ?

If a server has 5 tables and each table gets a new customer each hour, and they get a mere $5 per table...that's $27/hr...not too bad. I'm just think of a table for 2 where the total meal might be approximately $35 (just 2 meals, and drinks--nothing fancy)--that is not quite a 15% tip. Even on a bad night, your income is pretty decent.
However, we agree to the hourly rate we receive when we accept a job, and servers agree to work for the low hourly rate they get. They do depend on tips....and since that's the case, why do they not give excellent service, or at least a smile and a friendly positive attitude? And, if meals are late, or other things happen, just tell the customer what is going on, etc...I'm sure an explanation or apology will go a long way.
I personally like to tip for good service, but I've been with people who resent it because they save lives, receive very low pay, and cannot take any tips or tokens of kindness from those who they have helped.
I'm a good customer, don't ask for too much, but at the same time, expect to be treated as if they want my business.

I tip based on service only. Not quality of food or even menu price. Please consider that when most people go out they consider that they are paying for the package. Yes tipping is customary but should not be.
If I pay $40 for a steak dinner at one place and $50 for essentially the same meal somewhere else I better get something extra for my $10. Really should be service.
I think restraunts should pay decent wages. Those that want to charge higher prices would pay more for better servers to help justify those prices.
I can easily spend $100 on a nice dinner with my wife. Does a mediocre server deserve more of a tip than the excellent server at the place I only spend $60? Personally I have given the good server a $20 tip and the mediocre one only $10. Actually mediocre is a generous term.

Even 15% is a little low with the cost of living constantly rising. Some people dont realize that this is how we provide for our families and/or pay for school. It's not our faults that our hourly pay is so low. And if all people had the same opinion as the jerk a little before me that we should just not work since we dont make much by the hour...then their would be nobody there to wait tables. The truth of the matter is, people are always going to need to eat. These jobs will always be needed and we have to put up with a lot each and every day in order to provide a service.

Being a server, I can say from experience that we work hard for our money. We take the good with the bad (bad being the guy who answered before me). U really shouldn't be shitty and have such a bad attitude towards people that are handling your food buddy...just a warning. As many crappy, cranky, complaining people as I wait on, there are many more friendly, pleasant people that out number then. I'd choose to serve right now over anything else because It's paying my bills and my school just fine =) I average on 20 dollars an hour on a weekend, or on third shift any night. Can't beat it! and it's CASH...no taxes (that comes outta our checks like the asker said). my last check was 4 dollars =) haha

yes that is the rate. unless the service is miserable, which is uncommon for me (since i am a pleasent customer) everyone knows that servers do not get paid much more than $2 an hour. if you can not afford to tip the server accordingly, then you should stay home and serve yourself. that is part of the whole deal. i can not get over the attitudes that some people have regarding this. and yes, those who have attitudes like the guy above, really should be wary. you probably get all kinds of extras in your food. hahahahaha!!!!

20% is our minimum when dining out, unless the *service* is really horrible. If the food sucks but the server is great, it's still 20%. Around here tipping is even pushing 25%.

Well sorry fella, but why would you even consider taking a job that doesn't pay?
I generally don't tip guys. Period.
When I do tip, it's for lagniappe (a little something extra) such as quickness of service, accuracy, pleasantness, friendliness, thoughfulness, how attractive the waitress is (we all have to eat - it's nicer when there's a attractive woman to look at or deal with).
However, as far as the basics go: taking the order, bring out the food, clearing the table - I don't tip for that, I consider that the basic parts of your job and that's what you get paid to do. If you're not getting paid, get a job elsewhere.
Seems to me some of you below me don't deserve tips at all. You're threatening with added nasties to my food - that I believe would be unsanitary/unhealthy and illegal and it shows just what kind of person you really are. Also, just because you're getting cash, doesn't mean it's tax free - by law you are supposed to report that income and pay your taxes on it. So, you too are breaking the law - who did you say you are?
