Israel has enough problems dealing with it's enemies to attempt to add fuel to the Arab fire. Israel can make no difference to the hate filled Arab world, where minorities are treated with a total lack of compassion.Even normal human interactions and activities can lead to mob violence and mayhem that you don't encounter in London or Brussels or Tel Aviv. A case in point is the soccer violence in Port Said in Egypt where close on a hundred people were killed and a thousand injured. They attributed this to the Police,ex -dictator Mubarek and I would not be surprised if Israel was blamed. The cause was the history of the two clubs and their animosities. Syria is blaming foreign intervention for what is clearly a response to a tyranical dictatorship led by a hereditory oligarchy belonging to a Shi'ite minority. The Kurds have at long last been given semi -autonomous structures in Iraq. The Copts,10% of Egypt are quetly fast emigrating from Egypt with it's overwhelming new Muslim parliament. Hizbolla, backed by it's Iranian masters is in virtual control of Lebanon. Israel knows that if it supported any downtrodden minority in the Arab world it would be the kiss of death for that group, and certainly would not help Israel.

We have to protect interests in the Middle East. Like it or not if a country like Iran nukes neighbors and destoys oil fields and takes them over, we would be in a world of hurt, no gas, no work and people freezing to death. If you think that's not important you have no clue what's going on or you are an Iranian enemy!
1. The lame claim that we get all this oil from Iraq, where is it?, look at the facts first.
2. What's wrong with that, we have a prsence to protect allies and our interests.
3. I see Iran and Syria as more than unsympathetic. Iran threatens us and supports terrorism as well as Syria.

False, of course. Israel has had several wars with Muslim nations, and not once has the US intervened. The US involvement in the Middle East has been very sparse, compared to their involvement in Central and South America, or even Europe.

Since WW2, there have only been a couple of times the US was involved militarily in the Mideast. They used diplomacy and military show to keep France, England and Israel to take control of the Suez Canal. They did support Israel by sending her arms, but they never put boots on the ground. They participated in a multilateral attempt to stop the Lebanese Civil War, but left after the Marine barracks were bombed. And they headed the UN coalition to throw Hussein back after he invaded Kuwait.

I can't think of any other direct interventions in the Middle East. Of course, they did sponsor the Shah and other leaders as bulwarks against Communist influence during the Civil War, but again they did not intervene when the Shah was overthrown.

WRITING IN ALL CAPS USUALLY MEANS YOU HAVE NOTHING IMPORTANT TO SAY.

Wow those are much better reasons than protecting Isreal. Yeah that is definitely worth it. Isreal is not an alibi. If anything the US seeks alternative reasons to cover for its defense of Isreal. If you hadn't noticed defending Isreal is not very popular. The first gulf war was very openly about defending oil reserves. We told Isreal not to get involved so we wouldn't be seen as coming to their defense. You have to go back to lebennon in the 80's to find US military involvement directly related to Isreal. Your premise is completely flawed.

I'm sure your reasons above are part of THE REASONS, but you have to remember that the Western world is in constant threat of Islamic Terrorism. I also believe that protecting the only peaceful (or peace-seeking) country from violent, religious fanatics surrounding it is important.
Also, have you realized that these "unsympathetic governments" are after your life?

True and I'll second Great's answer, too.

I don't disagree with any of it.

I do very much think it is worth it.
