There are many reasons for people to be unhappy, depending on whom the specific person is.
The most basic reason for unhappiness is our desires. When we want something and are unable to attain the desired thing, we are unhappy.
Unfortunately, we always want something. Even if we got what we originally wanted, we start to desire something else. As this is life, none of us are going to get everything we want. There will be something we were unable to attain. Unfulfilled desires are the causes for most of our unhappiness.
Happy people are NOT people who always get what they want, as no one gets everything he or she wants.
Happy people are people who are able to be satisfied with what they have and accept the inability to attain everything. Happy people move on from their desires.
Are you willing to be happy?

The question why can related to a multitude of reasons. Sometime people become stuck and change to them may not seem possible, or they don't know how to change, or they may fear the situation can get worse if they change.
An interesting recent statistic, on the topic of unhappiness. Men on average are actually happier than they were in the past, but women are actually more unhappy. Particularly because more pressure has been place on the woman to have a carrier, because women are still at a majority the ones who cook, clean, and take care of the children. They have a more roles placed on them (role as a caretaker, and the role of a career woman). Eventhough the tradition has definitely been changing. The average woman still feels the some obligation be somewhat traditional (cooking, cleaning, taking care of the children) or else she'll be judged by other super moms.

Sorry, you get stuck with my rant for the day.... I think people are unhappy because the way we live is so terribly unnatural. Most animals sleep off and on all day they do not work nonstop for 8 to 10 hours a day, or even just going to school requires attention for that long, and then add in that you live so close to so many people, Humans are likely meant to know about 50 people total, but in our world today we see that many new people a day even if its just for a moment, its sensory overload. The tight quarters, and overcrowding leads to a sort of gloom, that makes it difficult to be happy, and the fact that we don't really get as much rest as we should, adds to the problem. Oh, and the standard answer too: People treat eachother badly, and then wonder why they get treated badly, treat eachother nicely and things will get better. End rant, sorry about that.

there are infinite reasons why people are unhappy. while people have a degree of control in the direction of their lives that doesn't mean that fate cant give you an unexpected blow that might leave you in a no win situation. Ex. Your loved one gets cancer. Your child is suicidal. You got fired from you job and have two kids and a wife to support. etc etc

Being unhappy takes a shorter time than making yourself happy... I am often unhappy because I don't have money to do the things I want... I suppose I should just be content... it's not like I am living in povety, being beaten, homeless... etc... I suppose it's all depends on what you want in life, and who you have in your life...

People are unhappy when they find themselves unable to fulfill all the wants and desires they have nurtured in their mind. Over estimating one's capabilities, resources and intelligence bring unhappiness. Also negative feelings like jealousy, or unhealthy competition bring unhappiness.

Life is all about making choices.. but sometims it isn't tht easy. We can make our lives what we want it to be. But if we know its going to hurt our loved ones.. would we till choose that way. There are times when we can't choose our own lives... due to many reasons.. that can create unhappinss.
But there are some people who are born to be unhappy. They just seem to stay that way whatever good things happen to them. I think it's some mental disorder :D

May be becoz most of peoples are running towards materialistic things. and if they dont get them they become unhappy. Happiness is just a state of mind, it is a choice which we choose if we didn't get things which we want.

I seriously think it's from all the crap that is put in foods. The hormones in the meat, the preservatives in junk food ect..
People just don't seem too health conscious, Most americans eat a lot of junk food and that does not help your system.
