does it have to do anything with how long the battery last?

It's the term for full charge to discharged. When you cycle a battery you charge it full, drain it fully, then charge it full again. This conditions the battery when you repeatedly do it.

a deep cycle battery is built a little different than what you use in a car. they are typically used in vehicles that do not have a charging system (no alternator). you can completely drain the battery then recharge it again. a car battery, you drain it once, and it will never be the same again.
as for this term meaning anything about the life expectancy of the battery over all, no cycle has nothing to do with the battery life.
