Honestly, for women.. it's a way of bonding.
I know it seems weird, but it's always nice to hear someone else thinks the same way you do! Even if its nasty callous and mean.

Not all women have PMS and I don't understand why it seems to be such a big deal to men. In the week before they get their periods, their estrogen levels drop off so emotionally they become more like men.
As for gossiping, I don't believe studies that suggest women do it more than men. What I believe is what I personally have overheard in conversations between men and those between women. Men gossip just as much as women. The only difference is that they tend to talk more about people they don't know personally than women do. They're more likely to talk about sports heroes and politicians. I will also say that men can be just as catty as women when they talk about people.

Why do the women here think everything between men and women is equal? I knew before even clicking on this question that it would be filled with responses from women saying "men do it just as often too".
The fact is, women on average gossip much more than men. This has also been proven with several studies backed with empirical evidence, recording the number of words a woman uses compared to men. This also included phone conversations -- women were found to gossip more than men.
Now, why is it that whenever a social trend is pointed out that isn't in women's favor, women quickly try to pretend that it's all equal? "Men do it too"...?
Ask anything -- ask why women have PMS, and I guarantee there will be at least one woman that says men have it too. I have had a woman actually try to convince me that men go through PMS.
EDIT, Rovale: You're biased. Women don't gossip about people they don't know? So all of those supermarket tabloids which are geared towards women, in which women read and gossip about Brad Pitt and Paris Hilton and Oprah and Justin Timberlake -- that was all my imagination? Those soap operas, which are mostly geared towards women; women are always rambling on about who kissed whom and who stole whose boyfriend -- more gossip about people they "don't know". Women are definitely bigger groupies and more celebrity-obsessed.
Oh, and you women-in-denial will LOVE this:
A feminist psychiatrist that conducted a study and finally admitted that women on average talk more than men -- http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/11/28/female_chat_addiction/

I don't care what the chauvinists on here say. In my experience, men gossip just as much. I know this was just one study, but "University of Arizona researchers fitted 400 male and female college students with microphones, taped their conversations and then counted how many words each gender used in a day. Despite the stereotype that women talk more, the researchers found that both genders actually use the same number of words in a day-about 16,000."

Well... Guys do to... But it's just a way to grab attention of someone else or turn the conversation so YOUR the one in power or something. It's like you find out something and you just say it as like a "i never knew that" and it turns into gossip.

Well, I don't, but generally people gossip out of boredom and a need for camaraderie.
