- as in "proud to be an American", "American Made", etc....isn't someone from Canada, Mexico, Brazil also technically "American" albeit from the North, Central, & South?

very true however USA are they only ones who normally term themselves from america, the other specify which country.
It does not make sense however it seems to work, and most people just know who or what you are talking about.

I laugh to quietly to myself. You could try to correct folks, or do the same.

Actually, if I grade papers and find this sort of thing, I quietly correct it as well. ("This product is totally American made!" 'Okay,' says I, 'but you do know that America is made up of two different continents and a double handfull of countries, yes?')

I also enjoy "As American as apple pie." At the very least they're european. At most they'd be arabian. Oh, well.

It is a bid vague, yes, but the term "American" is generally accepted as meaning a citizen of the United States of America.
