If it has an automatic transmission it can mess up the transmission. Same thing you don't tow a car with an automatic in nuetral for any major distance... that's why a tow truck will pick up the rear end of a rear wheel drive car and tow it backwards. Also, it isn't good if you don't have power steering and especially the power brakes when the motor is off. Also with newer fuel injected cars it's found that you should shut the car off to save gas if it's going to idle more than 30 seconds. It's not like the older carb cars that they say saves gas to keep it running. You wouldn't coast that long usually would you??

This sounds quite dangerous. Anything could happen during the time the engine is off. This may cause an accident if the driver needs to act quickly, it will be difficult with the engine off. Read the drivers manual. Driving is a privilege; be careful out on the road.

I wouldn't do it. You will lose the power steering pump and the power brakes will not be as effective while the engine is off. The car will not use that much gas while idling while you go down hill. So the advantages are eaten up by the extra risks you are taking in case of emergency moves with the power assist.
How much gas can you burn while traveling downhill? Not that much.
good luck.

Besides being ILLEGAL!
1; You lose all braking and power steering control.
2; Engine still pulls in fuel causing a Back Fire on moving restart.
3; Kick back on restart will Blow plugs, Damage Belts, Transmission and drive train, tire skid and possible drive line damage.
4; Worst with front wheel drive cars!

If your car has power steering or power brakes, then this practice is EXTREMELY dangerous. The engine drives pumps that power these systems.

two things, first off you burn off more gas starting it than letting it idle for 5 minutes ( or at least as i was told) you give up power steering with the engine off along with the ac....

it actually uses more gas by restarting the engine than it would be by letting it idle in gear and coast. also the combustion caused by restarting the vehicle actually puts more bad stuff into the air than by letting the vehicle idle in gear.

its okay but this does not save fuel it uses more fuel to turn the vehicle back on than it would to coast in neutral and then put it in gear again if its a standard (stick shift) it would be bad for the starter /alternator if its automatic you might ruin your transmission tell them not to be cheap and leave the car on its cheaper to leave it on than to go to a mechanic for maintenance

You may save a little bit of gas, but it's not good for your car to be on and off, on and off. Plus it's not safe.
