Hong Kong is a "Special Administrative Region" of China, and has been since 1997. I doubt that there would be any substantial difference between the two.

It's the same thing. Hong Kong is part of China. Yes there are extrordanary laws and rules that apply to HK, they were part of the hand-over agreement.
What is your objection to trading with China? Virually everyone does now. By opening up avenues of trade and commerce, China will inevitably be eased into a more open and more liberal form of government.
