Dragon movie?

Does anyone know the title of a movie from (I think) the 90's about a boy who's father is a king and just before he gets killed he gives the boy this tiny statuette that is supposed to guard him, then later the statuette comes to life and over time grows into a large dragon-esque creature?

hmm.. that one doesn't ring a bell..and I've watched many dragon movies..

For the record I can rule out Eragon and DragonWorld. Eragon finds an egg, and Dragonworld kid finds baby dragon. but is never GIVEN one..

Maybe Aragon or Dragon Heart.
