Why is the skull so popular in our culture? The image is everywhere, on teeshirts, the back of jackets, bumper stickers, you name it. When did its popularity originate in our culture?

I don't know. I guess people think they are bad@ss if they display it somehow. I really don't like it, I think armor looks much more cool.

Right now, though, you will see alot more as Halloween is coming.

I think there was always an awe or fear/respect associated with the skull in many cultures, but it had been very low key for so long.

In the West or at least in the US, the skull hadn't been really accepted for along time outside of medical doctors, clinical professionals, and renditions of Shakespeare's Hamlet.

The skull and crossbones on the jolly roger (pirate flag) is non-threatening in contemporary culture, but surely instilled a more ominous feeling a long time ago.

Now people (especially kids) have more and more freedom to express as our societal norms loosen, we typically go in the direction of defiance to align with a perceived power, if nothing else... They have T-Shirts, back packs, surf boards, skate boards, hats, phones, computers, necklaces, earings noserings, tongue and cheek piercings, etc....all with opportunity for personal expression. That's alot of opportunity for expression that wasn't really seen 60 or 40 or even 20 years ago...20 years ago the only skulls you saw were on Iron Maiden, or other heavy metal music shirts. The next generation tends to push the envelope in all directions - good, bad, and just further...

Also you have to consider addional media influence - the creation and movie adaptation of the comic book hero "The Punisher" (whose trademark/symbol is a skull) furthers the permiation of the image into our environment.

My $.02

Skull use to mean something else when I was a kid, but that is not appropriate here.
