violence in peace time is much different to the violence of war. Violence against women or children in a supposedly civilised state is horendes at best. War is a completely different thing. In war violence against women to a point may be exceptable, against children no, but at times it does happen. As example raping of women conquered in european history. It may not be the norm now but has been so through history. War has not really resolved any thing i has just stopped some sort of oppression ot conquered another people, and brought them under different rule. We still need to stand up fot those that are weaker than us, and some time that means others are going to be hurt in the violence. We need to teach peace in North America but is tough with the belief systems we use. I am not communist but like what is in China as no one is better than their neighbour and worth more financially. I also like their laws when it comes to dealing with criminals as the victums have more rights than the criminals do. Drugs importers of volume get death sentences. Violent yes but effective, and bennificial to society. So violence can be both effective and bennificial if used in the correct manner.

Violence isn't the answer, but unfortunatly it can be the last alternative. And we teach kids about war in school because history has a tendency to repeat itself, if we don't teach people about where we have come from, then why teach people anything at all?

Are you just now realizing that from a philasophical perspective, it is possible to take two topics that are both indeed true, but are diametrically oppposed?
And actaully your statement is not really true. Most educational curriculum are rightly critical of the Vietnam War, and how it was managed as a political event.

Because violence, in one form or another, may not be the answer but it's usually a pretty effective solution.
Besides, we're teaching kids. We're not telling them that it's wrong to invade a country to kill terrorists. We're telling them it's wrong to punch the neighbor kid in the face for not sharing his toy.

Because some people refuse to admit that violence is sometimes the answer to things. Sometimes you have to stand up and fight, and the will that's behind making such a decision terrifies some people.

We teach history in the hopes that we can learn from the past and not repeat the same mistakes. Unfortunately history tends to repeat itself.

its ok to fight when the government tells you to fight an defend something for the country....i have no problem with this part. i will fight for my country in a heartbeat if called upon, i love this place!!! i do have a problem with this part-- local governments (school, local police) prefer to have people to depend on them to protect them instead of protecting themslves. learn to depend on someone else instead of doing things yourself creates a dependent society that is not willing to fight for much of anything, ie our society today.
of course i have no degree. these are just my observations, im sure that other people who answer this question will point this out to everyone else quickly.

I think that wars should be remembered for the same reason that we remember that fire burns our flesh.
