tip top tune, regular maintainence, tyre pressures at the high end of the range, unltra clean airfilter, high quality fuel from a reputable petrol station (one that has a high turnover), ride like an old lady (you know, easy, anticipate the traffic, small amounts of throttle etc), make the bike carry less weight (maybe loose a few pounds)

You should get the engine tuned up from time to time, air pressure in the tyres must be as per makers specification, neither more nor less, and while riding you should have anticipations so that breaks are applied on lesser occasions. You should not carry unrequired load and you should keep your speed steady. Sudden acceleration and then applying break consumes/wastes much fuel. Some persons even change the carburettor to save fuel but they loose power and efficiency of the engine.

Have it tuned, increase the tyre pressure and ride moderately...ie anticipated stop and goes (this takes some practice)
