What's the best place to rent at San Antonio ?

I'd be moving into San Antonio and I have 2 little kids. I will be working dowtown, but want to rent in more of a suburban & family oriented setting. I need recommendation on places that have the best elementary public schools that have a reputation for high standards & test achievements, least crime & maximum safety, middle to up-scale neighborhood of educated professionals with access to great shopping, dining, medical, etc. I do not mind driving 10-15 miles to work. I can pay about 700 to 1100 dollars in renting a 2-bed apartment. I would prefer not to live in or about a predominantly hispanic neighborhood. Can someone point me to some great SA neighborhoods please. LOL.

Then you want to definetly move to these areas:

Anywhere Between 281 and I-35 outside of loop 410. That is the area with the best school disctrict in town for you and your kids. North East ISD is a very big school district, but you are not just "a number". A point was brought up recently about the school disctricts here because someone else is moving into the city also. North East does not forget about their kids every one is treated with respect and the administrators, teachers, staff, and couselors are so helpful. You can talk to them about anything. They are the most "technology advanced" disctrict in the city. My older brother works for a company that does work for the disctrict and they have everything up-to-date all the time. The computer systems are connected to a super fast but safe internet service for the kids so learning can be easier. The students can search the NEISD online library catalog from any computer on campus, even from home. They even have access to e-books, a website that has books your child can read online.

I don't know how long you'll be staying here, but we also have the best middle and high schools. I attended MacArthur high school and LOVED that school. That school does a really great job with the students.

NEISD has the Parent Portal so you, the parents can keep track of everything your child does at school, ie: Grades, Attendance, Disiplines, Text Books, Cafeteria Account Balances, and Books checked out through the library. Teachers have their own webpage set-up so you can see when an assignment is due or what to expect on the coming 9 weeks, IE: Tests, events, ect...

You can really see it in the teachers that they love where they're at and most important love what they're doing.

I attended Regency and Wetmore elementary schools and my parents never had any problems. The teachers and staff at this school were so involved in the parents and kids needs. Like I said, no one is ever forgotten.

On the other hand, my neice has always gone to North Side ISD schools, she and her parents don't like it at all. They're constantly having problems moving kids around because the boundaries can't stay the same because that side of town is growing faster than the schools can handle. You blink your eye and a new neighborhood has popped up. She feels as if she is a "number" not a student. The teachers are not really involved with the students, they have a textbook shortage so kids have to share books, their district is big and un-organized. I remember they couldn't find my nieces school records from the year before so my sister-in-law had to re-register her all over again. The teacher aren't paid as much as they should their...( I know, I'm going to college to become a Technology Education Teacher) NEISD starts the teachers out with more money than any other district in town.

As far as neighborhoods go anything along or near: Thousand Oaks, Jones Maltsberger, Bulverde Rd, Bitters Rd, Redland Rd, Henderson Pass, Wetmore Rd, N Loop 1604 E, Starcrest, and Hardy Oak will be a good neighborhood with a balance of people. They are close to shopping, dining, and medical (Inside Stone Oak). You have Northwoods on 281 @ 1604, Legacy Oaks also on 281 @ 1604. That area has all your major stores. Yes it has educated professionals.

Search the internet and look for your self you'll find some really nice apartments for your price range.

You will be about 10-18 miles from work depending on where you live. But anyway Hwy 281 takes you straight into downtown without any stops.

As our fair city is over 56% hispanic there are few areas which are not predominately hispanic. Though as far as your children are concerned our best school districts in the city are Northside ISD and North East ISD. A 2 bedroom can be found in your price range in those school districts. The ideal areas for your description would be around the 281/1604 corridor which has a large shopping base, area medical assets including 2 hospitals, a psychiatric hospital, and a major medical center being built, with medical offices and support services around it, a large number of restaurants. The crime level which is low for the city, though as others will probably point out you can find many conflicting sites which will skew the reports on the internet. Just understand that this is a major city and there is no area of the city that does not have some form of crime. I think most people will tell you that the north east thru the north west sides are generally safe. All areas of the city will have traffic issues at certain times of the day and there is no area of town spared from rush hour issues.
As far as neighborhoods, I would look at the schools and then look for apartments in the area.
The ratings for the schools can be found at the source list references below. The first will give data including school demographics (race, language, teacher ratios, etc), the second will give you the Texas education Agency school ratings, best is exemplary, then recognized, then acceptable, etc.
Northeast has 70 schools (11 exemplary, 31 recognized and 18 acceptable with 9 nonrated)
Nothside has 90 schools (6 exemplary, 53 recognized, 17 acceptable, 13 nonrated).

I'm waiting for some real SA people to answer here. My grandparents live in SA, so I know it's not anything like those last two answers above me. I don't have specific information, but I know where to find out more: www.sanantonio.gov/council is the city council's official website, www.mysanantonio.com is another great site about SA, www.sachamber.com is the Chamber of Commerce website. The schools are in Region 20, and that website is www.esc20.net. As for individual apartment communities, I've used www.apartmentratings.com before; it has ratings from renters and is fairly helpful.

yep look on the south side of san antonio, those will be the cheapest places. I know of one but I can not remember the name but it is by the State hospital. My friend lived there for about 200 a month, all bills paid.

Haha...all the neighborhoods in San Antonio are predominately Hispanic- especially in the low-rent (yet up-scale???) range you're hoping for.

Don't come here if you don't want to be near hispanics. There are hispanic doctors, attorneys, teachers, city council members, policemen, firemen, bus drivers, professors, coaches, realtors, CPA's, principals, business owners, architects, engineers, judges, general contractors, home builders, etc..... along with the stereotypical maids, gardeners and waiters. Sorry to inform you that they also live in the "up scale" areas, which your 700 to 1100 price range does not even come close. By the way I am not "LOL"
