Probably for the weather effect, so they could get a wide variety of it. Wind, rain, snow, sun I guess it makes better TV for the situation that they're in.

The weather in New Mexico may of been to hot for the kids if they waited to shoot it in the summer.
There were tutors on set with the kids to keep them up with there school work.

The simple answer is that it was originally intended to air in the summer, so they could never have finished post-production and editing in time if they had begun shooting in June.

is this show really popular or only a handful of people watch it. see limited posts. I turned it on and turned it off real fast.. no interest. but I oculd be wrong on that one. let me know.
