Your sweating the small stuff. Music is art. There really is no way of putting guidelines on it. No rules per say. You know what you like and create from that. Be original and add your own flair to the style.
You will be good to look into keyboard workstations or even a table top Groovebox to get started. Or look into software and a midi controller to get stuff down. Good luck and stay you!
