recently I had a neon tetra that looked like somebody had just cut off its tail fin. he was face down in the gravel when I noticed it. he really had no tail, it was all gone. he died a couple days later.he was in a 1gal tank with 3 other neon tetras and they didnt seem to pick on him. he didnt seem sick either until he lost his tail

i looked all over the internet as for a reason as to why this happened, but couldnt find one. anyone know why or what happened?

his tail was probably eaten by the other tetras, I have seen Tetras attack their own kind. Unable to move, due to his lack of tail, he died.

It might be because some other fish are eating the tail, but even if not, take the fish out if the aquarium and put it in a separate place, but make sure the temperature of the water is the same as where the tetra came from. Then try giving it medicine for tail growth and even if the tail doesn't grow back, the fish may be healed of it's sickness.

Try looking up fin rot. This is a bacterial infection that can attack the fins causing them to disintegrate.

This is usually related to water quality, so you might want to test (or have a pet store test) the levels of ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate in your tank. You may need to be doing larger or more frequent water changes (I suggest 25% of the volume each week), or you may be overfeeding (only give the fish enough that they can finish their food completely within 2-3 minutes). You may also want to increase the number of tetras - they're best kept in a school of at least 6. They can be fin-nippers when they're in too small of a group, but you should also see some damage to some of the other fish if this was the case.
