Depends upon the purpose.
I use the PVC pipes (hard pipes) for long permanent runs. Easier to set irrigation controllers / valves on PVC pipes.

I use the 1/2 " flexible poly tubing for temporary / seasonal runs. It is easier branch to branch drip irrigation runs from these. The path can be changed easily. The couplers do not need PVC cement.

I'd go with poly tube (i call it dripline) because of the cost, and the ease to change things as you need to. It can be hidden under a layer of mulch.

PVC is neede dif you want to have it buried, or a presureized faucet somewhere. Quite a bit more work.

I have micro bubblers on some of my trees on the dripline. Works great.

Are you going to be running a lawnmower over your tubing? Then use the pvc.
