I have found a product that has been very useful to me. It was made out an Aluminium material with very small holes that only lets water in. I bought it about 3 years ago and used it on my house to help with my pine needle problem and it works very well. The link is below.

About 3 or 4 years ago, I saw one that uses a rounded spillway where there's only a small ~ 1/2" slot near the outboard edge of the gutter.

Water flows off the roofing and onto the convex spillway where it follows the curve down into the slot and into the main channel of the gutter.

Being that the slot is only about 1/2" wide, only small leaves and debris could get in, and those would generally be small enough that they'd be washed down the downspouts without clogging.

I put some on my sister's house (in NC) from Home Depot that worked really well...they are solid plastic and have a curved edge so the water flows down into the gutter with some slots for water to run into but they keep leaves, twigs and pine needles from going in. You slide them under the shingles and they snap onto the gutters...make sure to keep them tight together and you'll have to custom cut and caulk them for corners. Each section is 4 feet long and they run about 3.50 each so you'll have to measure your gutters to see how many sections you need and to figure out the cost. If you live in an area that has lots of snow in winter, you may have problems with any gutter guard style getting loaded with snow and ice.

All gutter guards will trap leaves and need to be cleaned regulary.

I don't use any gutter guards on my house. What I do have is crab grass growing around the house and keep it neatly cut and trimmed. No matter how much water falls from that roof, it will not make holes in that grab grass:):):)

Sometimes the solution is not in the gutter ...it's in the grass you choose.
