This is the perfect time to plant trees. Make sure you dig the hole very deep, and break up the soil around it and under it. You may need to fill some back in if you go too deep, but it is better to do it that way than not enough.
Make sure you leave a good size cirle around it where you mound the dirt a bit to hold water. Water deeply every day until you get a hard frost.
I can't advice you on type without knowing what area or zone you are in - the type of trees that do well in the north don't do so great in the south.
I usually always plant a least one conifer, like a cedar or juniper or pine tree, they grow almost everywhere. Also love flowering trees.

The best time to plant trees are in fall why? Because the newly planted tree knows winter is coming and will concentrate on root development instead of Trunk, limb and foliage.

The soil stays warm, which will help keep roots growing. The above ground temperatures are cooling down considerabaly, which reduces the need for constant watering. This combination will help get these plant a real good jump start for next spring.

How does the tree know winter is coming? If You find out please let me know!

In New York the growing season is usually Oct 15 to Dec 15 if you want to transplant a tree you bought. If you're growing from seed, you can start it early indoors and then plant it when Spring comes.

The Oct-Dec season is for the tree that's going into domancy to have a time to reestablish its root system before the ground freezes.

All this depends on which zone you're in and what type of tree you're planting. Some trees are suitable for Spring planting only.

As for the type of tree. It also depends on the how much light does your backyard will provide for the tree. You can ask your local garden/nursery center to choose a good tree.

Pines and spruces are good for annual Christmas decoration.

Cherries and other fruit trees are good for fruits.

Here in NY I planted a Catalpa tree, which grew 3 feet in one year from seed and produced huge leaves about the size of a basketball. I wanted shade quickly for my backyard, that's why. In 2 more years I'll have a 8-10 feet tree to provide some shade. I chose it for shade mainly. I also have a small spruce tree for Christmas decoration. A promengrate for its beautiful hanging fruits.

Go look around and see what you like and what you need and then plant a tree that you'll probably treasure for years to come.

I would wait until the heat comes down a little before trying to plant a tree because the heat will stress the tree and it may not make it through the fall/winter to spring.

Here in Texas, my hometown Bryan/College Station, is home of Texas A&M University, one of the foremost agricultural universities in the US. The city is also known as the Crepe Myrtle capitol of Texas.

There are crepe myrtles everywhere, most of them shaped from bushes into 15' trees with the smoothest bark and tons and tons and tons of purple, pink, red or white lacy blooms that fall on everything around it.

I thought my husband had added the wrong chemical to my car's windshield cleaner, because the glass was sticky. You guessed it: I parked under the crepe myrtle tree during sap season. That's when you park a little further down the driveway than usual.lol

So that's my favorite bush/tree. Plant one for me.

I dont know where you are, but here in Washington State it is a great time for planting. I could advise you that i love Katsura trees, but i dont know if they are hardy where you are. Check your local garden center or get books from the library that tell you what is hardy in your area.
