I'm going to Paris but I need to be able to get a hotel room on my own. Can I get a room in a hostel at only 17 years old?

I have good experiences with these hostels, in the center of town and safe, clean and a good security:

I did not see anything about age requirements and 17 is not that young for traveling in Europe, but if in doubt, contact before you decide to use them.

You should have no problem staying at hostels even if you are underage. Just take a signed letter of consent from your parents or your legal guardians along with you. But if you want to make sure they accept you, stay in the official IYHA/HI hostels or call the hostel in advance.

BTW, in hostels you generally do not book rooms - you book a bed in a dorm. That's why hostels are so cheap, you know. There are dorms that are mixed with up to 20 people and other dorms that are single-sex with 3 or 4 people. It depends upon the hostel. The more people to a room, the cheaper. Search for "hostel paris" and you'll find lots of adresses and reviews for hostels in Paris.

I've never been to France but I doubt the country has age restrictions on hostels...that just seems so American. I'd recommend going to your local library and grabbing some travel books, they're loaded with good information. I personally like Moon but Lonely Planet is really popular (especially with French travelers). Enjoy the trip.

Try the Kiriad hotel. It's a small reasonably-priced hotel serving the best buffet breakfast in the world. I love their croissant and cheese. It's just a few minutes walk to the Metro that brings you to the arc de triomphe.

I recommend staying at a registered youth hostle. Reasonable prices, safe to stay and easy to meet other young people. See the organzation "International Hostling" at the bottom of this page. Get a membership, and you'll have no problem getting a reservation.

Check out www.hihostels.be

They cover France and Belgium. Clean and not too expensive, good professional staff as well. 17 is OK.

Enjoy your trip.
