SUV, Soccer Moms, Chiminea in the yard for night time BBQ's with neighbors, landscaped perfectly manicured lawn, a dog, an in ground pool for some....it's a sweet picture!

Can we rename it the Suburban Ideal? Or the Suburban Dream? I mean it's great, but not for me!! And Im American...and I'd still like my own dream!!

For me, it will. But for some other people, they would think of America as a free will place with kind people. The media sort of screwed the American Dream over. But we have made some interesting inventions and created talent and such everywhere. Even though America wouldn't seem like a great place, this place is pretty amusing. The Suburban Life isn't that bad. The Suburban Life is just a portion of America. So my answer to that is yes and no. There is no specific American Dream.

Yeah was this not designed by Washington in order that the average Joe knew what they may lose should socialism ever reach the shores of the states? ( I aint a socialist or communist incedently) These are the sort of goverment wheels that create, abuse and deny, world over to keep themselves in a power position in terms of career. Mr, I can`t stop smilling `cos the face lift was too tight, recently stood down and made way for his succesor. He did this at this time while things seemed ok to joe soap, but he choose this time that he may go down in history as having the credit of brining peace to Northern Ireland, devolved goverment to Scotland and certainly a world player on the quest for peace. The true dream was that of a place with new opperunities, prospectives and asperations of a brave new world. The world over still endures inequality, poverty and greed. Politicians have the power to change things, that would mean putting some of the worlds big indutries in their place.

The "American Dream" is the suburban life. It was invented in the 1950s. Indeed, much of our image of American "traditions" was invented in the 1950s, not traditional at all.

God I hope not.

I think the American Dream is being able to take care of yourself and your family through fulfilling work that you enjoy doing and which provides you and yours a comfortable life.

Along with that are where you feel most comfortable and secure to make it a reality and for some people it's the suburbs. For me, though, it's in a large city.

Peace,
Jenn

The term subaltern itself is an American creation to make distinctions. Now who are the subalterns out side the American frame?

For some people. Home ownership is often equated with the American dream, and most people in suburbs own their own homes.
