During the federal investigation of Jones' use of steroids she lied to the federal investigators. Lying to federal investigator is a crime. (Martha Stewart didn't go to prison for insider trading. She went to jail for lying when she was questioned by the SEC.)
A Sept. 3, 2003, search warrant at BALCO uncovered ledgers, purchases, doping calendars, and various blood-test results connected to Jones and Graham When it came to the point in the investigation when the government was ready to charge Jones, she faced a number of charges.. She made a deal to plead guilty to lying to federal investigators.
She also pleaded guilty to a second count of lying to investigators about her association with a check-fraud scheme. In the check-fraud scheme, Jones admitted lying about her knowledge of the involvement of the father of her child, Tim Montgomery, her agent, Charles Wells, and her former coach Steve Riddick. The scheme was to cash millions of dollars worth of stolen or forged checks. Montgomery, Wells; and Riddick have all been convicted in the scam.

The Feds had leverage they had strong evidence on Marion Jones to get serious jail time, but also an 8 year statute of limitations where her 2000 Olympic medals could be taken away. After this year, Jones could confess to ALL of her prohibited drug use, yet keep the Olympic medals.
So Jones has a choice: A. avoid going to jail, but risk losing medals, or B. keep your medals but you'll be in jail for 3 years. Looks like Jones took choice A.

The Feds had her lying to them under oath. She is going to do some jail time, and hoped to shorten that time by admitting her guilt.
She is now claiming she did not know what her coach was giving her at the time, so she is still lying about her involvement.
But, like most people the more she lies the more things we can see that don't add up.
She is now disgraced, will lose all of the medals and awards, is going to be bankrupt, isn't qualified to work at MacDonald's, no one is going to give her a job in athletics, most of her contracts have clauses that will allow the companies to try to recover the money they gave her.
She may get a few months of jail time, but her life is over, and except for her family she is an outcast in society.

She was in court in New York facing a charge of lying to a federal investigator.
She didn't confess - she pleaded guilty at her trail and then "leaked" a letter she wrote apologizing.

Jones has never failed a drug test using the then-existing testing procedures - and insufficient evidence was found to bring charges regarding other untested performance enhancing drugs.

Of course it was more than guilt. Maybe she wanted public sympathy, or she was going to be exposed by someone else.

cos it was leaked from a letter she wrote to a family member and would be no point trying to cover up the lie anymore. the press would have dragged it out of her and cause even more prolonged pain

She got caught.
She figured she'd get more sympathy for "coming forward" than waiting for the bomb to drop.
What a loser.
