I have had 3 open heart surgeries, which have left me with a scar on my chest in the shape of Algiz. I am a chaos lover, a Lokian, and have always taken a shine to the Norse myths. I was reminded of the myth of Gulliweg (spelling?) the giantess/witch who the gods tried to burn three times, she lived, Loki ate her heart? I also have a scar on my back, a line, which looks like Isa. I am looking for knowledge of these runes, stuff that goes beyond "the meaning" in divination. Any insight or info would be appreciated.

Welll, alliegence to a deity isn't like putting on a friendship bracelet and then one day being all "well since there's an ice rune on me, screw you and all your help, and by the way, I'm leaving you for Heimdall?" Do you KNOW what He's like when he's vexed. NO ONE likes a pissy trickster!
Oh, and I appreciate the knowledge of the rune's magickal meaning. I am actually a neurotic mess of anxiety, and am thinking of doing a ritual involving my two runes (made into a bindrune ) that could aid me in overcoming my panic attacks.
BTW, my definition of Lokian is quasi-shamanic-quantum-physics-kitchen-witch (who just so happens to be friends with a god, and even speak aloud to Him on occaison.)

I use runes extensively, and when you use runes in magic, they can often represent something a bit different from the divination meanings. Because these runes will be on you permanently, I'll explain the magical meanings and not the divination meanings, since these runes' energies will be affecting you for the rest of your life.

The energy that Algiz gives a person when worn on the body is that of Universal luck and a very keen knowledge of ones right to survive and defend themselves. The protection bestowed by this rune is not the defensive thorn-like protection of Thurisaz but the more offensive protection represented by a set of antlers, which is what the Algiz rune symbolizes (Elk). Of all the runes, you couldn't have asked for a better rune to be carved into your chest!

As for the Isa on your back, many people might want to label Isa as being inauspicious, but when used in magic, Isa is VERY powerful and bestows the energy of calm, peace and tranquility. This rune practically shouts "SLOW DOWN AND ENJOY LIFE!", and if this is something you've had a hard time doing in the past, then Isa is going to definitely help you with it. If it was on your chest, it would be something to be concerned about, because it could potentially affect your ability to move forward in life or even get started on projects. Because it is on your back, it has the potential to bring peace and calm to you without encouraging stagnation. However, if you already have a very calm personality and it seems to be slowing you down, you may want to consider having the rune changed by using henna or even a permanent tattoo to something that will be more helpful for your particular situation. Suggestions:

Fehu=Brings abundance (money)
Uruz=Physical strength, good health and confidence
Wunjo=Happiness and contentment
Tiwaz=Moral strength and victory
Eihwaz=Determination, will power and fortitude
Laguz=Increases sensuality and intuition (avoid if you are already very sensitive. If you're a male, you may get made fun of by people knowledgable in runes because Laguz is often considered to be more of a feminine rune)

Any of these runes could be created by adding no more than two lines to the Isa.

The algiz scar means protection, but it is the protection of justice, and order, and the fabric of community. It is the sign of the moose, which is the totem of the family. The Isa scar means Ice. It is the rune of a focused life - the old straight and narrow, if you will.

Since Loki is a fire-ettin, he doesn't mix too well with the Isa (ice) rune. It might be a sign to change your allegiance. Perhaps you should go to the allegiance of Heimdall, whose rune is Algiz.

Oh, Loki did not eat her heart. He was actually on her side, as she was a kinswoman. As a fire-ettin, Gulveig was quite at home in fire.

Added: I have been studying runes for about 15 years. I don't tell people what they want to hear. I just tell them what the runes are saying, and the runes don't lie.

Tyr has a well concept - exchanging the rune from it is normal variety will disrupt the vigour. And to others, burning or burying truthfully can unencumber the vigour, sending it out and dealing. A longer term spell can also be very robust through burying a work of wooden with runes. "As this wooden returns to the earth, would possibly those runes unencumber.........." If you desire a cut-off date on a spell/running - comprise that. "For the span of 1 complete moon to the following....." and so on.

Algiz is a rune of protection of the shield-it covers you and keeps you from harm. Algiz means that the you will be protected. I don't think the fact that your scar formed Algiz. I would consider it a blessing. You are protected and shouldn't fear conditions relating to your heart. . . even if you wind up with another heart surgery. . . fear not.
