For those who answered -5 are correct. For those who answered 27 are wrong, since -x^2 should be -1(-4)^2=-1(16)=-16, hence, -16+12-1=-5. And those who answered -29 are also wrong since -3(-4) should be +12 not -12 .

Wes said it; too many answers for a simple problem
Here is how to do it:
-x^2-3x-1, x=-4
-(-4)^2-3(-4)-1
-16+12-1 = -5

Your flaw is that you messed up the signs and didn't square correctly
EDIT: you messed up the signs so bad I got messed up..
It should be
-1(-4)^2-3(-4)-1 < MINUS 3
-1(16)+(12)-1 < 16 not 8
-16+12-1 < -1 not +1
-4-1 <- same as above
=-5

No, the square root of 4 is 16, not 8. Also the negative on the x value in the squared term must be carried through before you square it The final answer is 27.
