The stars are best visible from different locations in america. Some are clearer than others. How do I find out which states and locations have the most pristine skies available for seeing the stars? I already tried several google searches and I'm not getting good, straight answers. Please Help!

The best place for me is the Custer Observatory ,
on Main Bayview Road in Southold, NY.

They rightfully brag about having "the darkest skies on Long Island". And they are correct! They have managed to reduce the local light pollution (via personal negotiation with neighbors, as well as some county cooperation.) Looking South for their grounds, the Soutthern skies appear over Shelter Island; to the North, there are some vineyards, then the Long Island Sound.

Every Saturday night, Custer opens its telescopes to the general public, form dusk until midnite. (It's free to the public, but this nonprofit institute also accepts voluntary donations.)

If you are ever on Long Island (or even in NYC),
why not plan a Saturday excursion? Check out the L.I. vinyards (especially Martha Clara), maybe grab a meal in one of the grat restaurants (like my favorite, Claudio's in Greenport or maybe the Soundview, with its great piano bar), then wander over to Custer and see the Ring Nebulae or the four moons of Jupiter or the Horsehead Nebula, thru the big telescope in the dome.

The Custer website is at

Check it out!!!!

The McDonald observatory near Fort Davis, TX is the one place in the continental US with the lowest level of ambient light polution.

They are very much open to the public and have frequent star parties -- and the view is spectacular.

Go as far away from the city lights as possible. The 'light pollution' interferes with your ability to see the stars. I would guess that somewhere in Alaska or in the barren desert would be the best.

Death Valley is an excellent place to view. I am not far from there and even with the minimal lights here you can see the milky way nicely.

You said American, so I would guess northern Canada up near the artic circle, or in the very south of Mexico or in the Andes.
