I think mediuming is a few notches into psychic development. A person may be able to tune into energies, telepathy, precognition after some psychic development but to right away begin hearing spirits may be a ways down the road.
To suggest a path to mediuming I would start with dreams and journaling them to help open yourself to psychic impressions from your guides and higher self. Then find some meditation tapes that work for you. Perhaps add some experimenting in astral projection and then finally when you feel emotionally ready look into channelling.

P.S. You may find you uncover gifts that you would rather have and appreciate more. Sometimes uncovering other psychic abilities may cause problems that really you don't have the tools to handle.

It depends on how philosophically flexible you are. The Asians did a lot in this field. If you are interested, google Maudglayayana. He was recognized as the master of occult powers during SAhakyamuni's time. I have had many telepoathic experiences and two out of body experiences since working with sgi-usa.

Frankly, I don't believe in mediums. However, a would-be medium is going to have to impress people that she (or he) is trying hard. I don't know of any schools for this, but there must be a para-psychology board in Yahoo. Why not ask there?
