You shoot or throw a harpoon into the seal a whale to capture and kill it.

According to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harpoon
"A harpoon (from French harpon) is a long spear-like instrument used in fishing to catch fish or other large aquatic animals such as whales. It accomplishes this task by impaling the target animal, with the fishermen then using the a rope or chain attached to the butt of the projectile to draw the creature in. A harpoon can also be used as a weapon."

Native Americans who live in Alaska (Eskimos) are allowed to hunt in their old tribal method and they can go to sea and use small harpoons to hunt seal and whales. The Japanese still hunt whales and this is very unpopular and has attracted the attention of Green Peace Warriors more than once.

During the Whaling Period of American History the Gray Whale was almost hunted to extinction. The wooden whaling ships used a harpoon fired out of a cannon to capture their whales. They then lowered whaling boats to come along side and continue the hunt, finish the kill and finally to haul the carcass to the side of the ship where it was rendered.
