Tell the truth you need the hours, point blank. no one can argue with that. you might want to see if anyone else working would like the day off, so that person can work.

I once had a co-worker get really upset with me because I could not trade a work day with her. (I work 2 jobs and my days at both places are set in stone) I just had to let her get over it. Just be straight with the person, don't offer excuses. They are a grownup, too, and should understand plain talk "Sorry, but I just really need the hours myself with Christmas coming, and can't afford to switch" Period.

Umm, just tell your co-worker that you need the hours. You don't need an excuse. You don't have do switch with him/her if you don't want to.
